Physical Education

The Bert Corona Charter School physical education program attempts to educate every child in the importance of staying physically active.  Through a variety of sports and physical activites, BCCS has managed to prepare the majority of its students for a healthy and physically active lifestyle.  Some of the past units and activities covered in this program have been football, ultimate frisbee, rhythms, soccer, basketball, rock climbing, self-defense, hockey, softball, team building, and a variety of other activities.  The physical education progam here at BCCS is constantly making improvements and changes in order to bring its students the highest quatility education. Students can also sign up for the President's Physical Fitness Challenge which awards students who go above and beyond what is expected for their personal fitness.

The 2010-2011 school year looks to be another year of great success for the physical education department here at Bert Corona Charter School. Although we no longer have the Carol M. White Physical Education Grant, we are currently reapplying for the same grant. Regardless of whether or not we receive this grant, the physical education department has established a variety of procedures that will help the students to grow physically, academically and emotionally during their time here. The department will utilize the resources it has been given over the past several years to help every child understand the importance of leading a physically active lifestyle.

The 2009-2010 school year brought many successes for the Bert Corona Charter School students. The students pushed themselves to reach their physical limits in order pass the California Physical Fitness Exam. The majority of the students improved in their personal physical fitness levels, resulting in a schoolwide improvement in both physical and emotional levels. The school also participated in its third and final year of the Carol M. White Physical Education Grant. The school continued to receive funds allowing the physical education department to further develop its resources. The 8th grade students were also able to participate in another year of Fulcrum Adventures where they experienced the same type of learning opportunities as students from years prior.

The 2008-2009 school year was another successful year for the Bert Corona Charter School physical education program. In year two of the Carol M. White Physical Education Grant, the school continued to recieve funding for school equipment, enrichment lessons for the students, and professional develpment for the teachers. The 8th grade students had the opportunity to experience a ropes course, where they participated in team building activities, rock wall adventures, pole climbing, tight rope walking and a leap of faith. This was again another successful event. The students were taught many valuable lessons and were able to apply what they had learned to their daily lives.

During the 2007-2008 school year, the Bert Corona Charter School physical education program received a three year grant known as the Carol M. White Physical Education Grant. This grant has provided the school with sports equipment, a 25 ft. rock wall and numerous enrichment lessons through Fulcrum Adventures. Our 8th grade students had the opportunity to experience a ropes course, where they participated in team building activities, rock wall adventures, pole climbing, tight rope walking and a leap of faith. Many of the students managed to overcome a variety of obstacles throughout the school year as a result of lessons they learned through Fulcrum Adventures.
